The St. Catherine Parish Council is undertaking drain cleaning works in preparation for the 2006 hurricane season, which begins tomorrow (June 1).
“To date, the St. Catherine Parish council has begun its drain cleaning programme with what funds we have from the Parochial Revenue Fund,” said Mayor of St. Catherine, Dr. Andrew Wheatly.
He told JIS News, that the parish disaster committee has been very active, noting that, “shelter managers are in place and there is collaboration with agencies such as the Fire Brigade, Food for the Poor, National Works Agency (NWA) and others.”
Dr. Wheatly noted however, that more money was needed to carry out preparedness activities and “we have written to the Ministry of Local Government and Environment for additional funds to assist us with our drain cleaning and other programmes and make us more prepared for whatever disasters the hurricane season might bring.”
