The Full Story

The St. Ann’s Bay Library is to be transformed into the Marcus Garvey Library and Museum in honour of Jamaica’s first National Hero.

Minister of Water, Environment & Climate Change and St. Ann North Eastern Member of Parliament, Hon. Matthew Samuda, made the disclosure during his State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (October 6).

“The Right Excellent Marcus Garvey is from St. Ann North East. There can be no greater recognition of his legacy than to ensure the economic mobility of the people of [the constituency] through education,” he said.

He noted that the library will foster transformation as people go there for a wealth of information and knowledge.

“Education remains central to the vision we have for St. Ann North East because we know when we invest in our people, we strengthen our families, our communities and, ultimately, the future of the constituency,” Mr. Samuda said.

“We have big dreams like Marcus Garvey for education in St. Ann North East,” he added.
Minister Samuda commended Custos Rotulorum of St. Ann, Joseph Issa, who secured the support of the Garvey family to publicly display the National Hero’s car at the St. Ann’s Bay Library.

The Rt. Excellent Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay and died on June 10, 1940.

The black nationalist and civil rights leader is founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).
