St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners (SAJBP) recently awarded scholarships valued at approximately $2 million to 24 students from the parish, who attend tertiary institutions across the island.
The award was made under the company’s annual scholarship programme. “St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners knows that there are many challenges facing educational development across the parish of St. Ann so as a result, we have embarked on this assistance programme wherein we try to assist needy students, who are nevertheless performing at the highest level at school,” said Public Relations Officer at the SAJBP, Winston Watson.
He told JIS News that the company, on a yearly basis, seeks to help students in various ways such as providing summer employment and presenting them with back-to-school grants as well as other forms of donations.
“Apart from all of that, we have instituted a scholarship programme where we give the students money to further their education and the only thing that they need to do, providing that they are selected for this programme, is to maintain good grades,” Mr. Watson said, informing that last year, a total of 25 students from tertiary institutions benefited from the programme.
Scholarship awardee and first year medical student at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Dwayne Young, told JIS News that he is grateful for the assistance from the SAJBP.
“I live with the aspiration of becoming a medical doctor in the year 2012. Financially, it was a bit of struggle but I am assured that this scholarship has really alleviated many of my academic wants financially and I want to sincerely thank the company for this privilege,” he said.
