The Full Story

The eighth staging of the Scientific Research Council (SRC) ‘Conversations in Science Series’ will focus on men’s mental health under the theme ‘Zero Male Suicide: Men’s Life Matter’.

The event is set for October 26 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St. James.

Speaking with JIS News, Technical Information Officer at the SRC, Latanniya Johnson, said the primary aim of the event is to empower young men to take charge of their mental well-being.

She said that the session “serves as a critical platform to address the mental health challenges faced by men, reduce the stigma surrounding issues of male suicide and, ultimately, work towards the goal of preventing male suicides entirely”.

Additionally, she noted, it will seek to encourage peer support and highlight the importance of seeking help and explore best practices and strategies to lower male suicide under the guidance of experts in mental health, suicide prevention and male well-being.

“This is a safe space for open and honest discussions… [and] encourages participants to share their experiences, ask questions, and engage in meaningful conversations, thus breaking the silence that often surrounds this issue,” Mrs. Johnson noted.

The Conversation in Science Series is a quarterly event hosted by the SRC to promote awareness, pique interest, and provide a better understanding of science and technology in schools.
