The Full Story

The Scientific Research Council (SRC) is inviting the public to participate virtually in the next instalment of its Conversations in Science series, today (November 27).

The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. under the theme ‘Weathering the Future: Science, Food Security and Smart Infrastructure for a Resilient Jamaica’.

Individuals can access the session live from YouTube, Zoom and Facebook on the Council’s platforms as well as those of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS).

Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager of the SRC, Carolyn Rose Miller, said the discussion is critical, especially in light of recent events, such as Hurricane Melissa.

“We have to revisit how we do things, how we build structures and shape policies relating to climate change. It’s very important in making a more resilient Jamaica,” she told JIS News in an interview.

Mrs. Rose Miller also underscored the inclusive nature of the event, calling on policymakers, academics, and the general public to engage in the conversation, as climate change affects everyone.

Additionally, the event aims to influence the national research agenda, encouraging universities and students to explore climate-related topics that yield meaningful data and insights to inform policy.

“It’s key for the universities to be there, so they can undertake research that contributes to Jamaica’s resilience,” Mr. rose Miller said.

Moderated by Life Scientist and Innovation Strategist, Dr. Aisha Bailey, the event will feature a keynote address by Minister with responsibility for Science, Technology and Special Projects, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley.

The panel will include distinguished experts such as Vice President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica and Geospatial Technology Expert, Dr. Parris Lyew-Ayee Jr.; Director General of Hazardous Substances Regulatory Authority (HSRA), Biotechnologist, Dr. Cliff Riley; Professor and Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Computing, University of Technology, Professor Sean Thorpe; Chief Executive Officer of Caribbean Climate Innovation Centre (CCIC), Carlington Burrell, and Regional Chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Americas and President-Elect of the Jamaica Institution of Engineers (JIE), Dr. Leighton Ellis.
