The Full Story

The seventh staging of the Conversations in Science Series is set for March 8 at the Gulf View Hotel in Mandeville, Manchester.

Held quarterly, the event is hosted by the Scientific Research Council (SRC) to promote awareness and increase understanding of science and technology in schools.

More than 250 students from high schools and tertiary institutions in the central region are expected to attend.

Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager, Carolyn Rose Miller, said they will benefit from a rousing discussion under the theme ‘Cracking the Code: Improving Science and Technology for a Gender-equal Future’.

She underscored that the focus is fitting for the day, which is observed as International Women’s Day annually. The celebrated day is known to bring attention to issues such as gender equality in all areas of life, among other things.

“Through their participation, the attendees will develop an appreciation of the importance of engaging with local scientists and technologists to improve science and technology in our society,” Ms. Rose Miller said.

A panel comprising several trailblazing women in science and technology is the main highlight of the session.

Its members include Senior Lecturer in the Chemistry Department at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Dr. Marvadeen Singh Wilmot and Creative Technologist, Kerri-Anne C. Walker.

Other activities are the viewing of exhibits and mini workshops. The SRC will also introduce virtual reality and other exciting activities to this staging through a partnership with the Northern Caribbean University.

The SRC is an agency of the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology, with responsibility for fostering the development of scientific research, serving as a repository of scientific information, and facilitating the development, application, transfer and/or improvement of the technology of such research for Jamaica’s benefit.
