Minister with responsibility for Sport, Hon. Natalie Neita Headley, has pledged the Government’s full support for the national netball team, as it prepares to face England in a three-match series, which begins later this week.

She said the Sunshine Girls will be formidable against their British counterparts and expressed confidence that they will do well.

The Minister was delivering the keynote address at a function held at the Courtleigh Hotel in New Kingston on Wednesday (January 7) to announce the national squad for the Supreme Ventures-sponsored series.

“You are so motivated and well prepared that you are going to give it your best. As a nation, we are proud of you, as a team, we know you will do well. All of you named today, you are most deserving of your places,” she said.

Minister Neita Headley noted that the series will test the national team’s readiness for the Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia, come August.

“We are expecting that out of this series we will recognise that you are ready and prepared. This is where it begins…the publicity around these games has been tremendous,” she said.

The 14 team members are: Romelda Aiken, Jhaniele Fowler, Shanice Beckford, Anna-Kay Griffiths, Thristina Harwood, Shantal Slater, Paula Thompson, Khadijah Williams, Sasher-Gaye Henry, Adean Thomas, Nicole Dixon, Vangelee Williams, Nicole Aiken-Pinnock, and Stacian Facey.

The series gets underway on Saturday (January 10), at the National Indoor Sport Centre in Kingston, starting at 4: 00 p.m. The other two matches are slated for Sunday (Jan.11) and Tuesday (Jan. 13), beginning at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

The matches will be preceded by “thrill games” such as Celebrities versus Masters and Corporate Giants versus Entertainers.

Coach of the Sunshine Girls, Minneth Reynolds, expressed confidence ahead of the series. “We believe that the team is truly one that has the championship experience. They are series tested, and are ready to carve their own destiny,” she said.

She also noted that the series against England is a “crucial event in our preparations for the World Cup.”
