Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites is encouraging more of the country’s youth to get involved in sports.
He noted that sports provide an excellent outlet for young people, who do not have strong role models.
“Nowadays, it is hard to find leaders that the youth can look up to, and for them to be able to express themselves through the medium of sports is very significant,” he said.
Rev. Thwaites was addressing a ceremony for the handover of a cheque for $150,000 to the Allman/Woodford Football Club by Stocks by Securities Limited (SSL). The presentation took place on Friday (Aug.14), at SSL’s Hope Road offices.
The Education Minister, who is Member of Parliament for Central Kingston, where the communities are located, thanked SSL for the generous donation.
“Allman/Woodford has distinguished itself for good discipline and it is worthy of SSL’s support. So, on behalf of the broader community and the generations that will follow in this club, I thank you,” he said.
Rev. Thwaites said he will be pushing for the upgrading of the football field at National Heroes Park as part of the improvement plans for the area.
“There is an informal, makeshift field currently in that area and I am insisting that there be a proper field set up for the youths of the community like Allman and Woodford and for the communities on the western side as part of the renovation of the park…we are attempting to make sure that we have a full state-of-the-art football field at Heroes Circle,” he noted.
General Manager for SSL, Lamar Harris, said the donation is part of the company’s desire to give back to the wider community.
“We are passionate about Jamaica and a part of our mission, outside of financial goals, is that we want to give back to our countrymen and … the passion of this club…is evident… so we feel lucky that we are able to assist them” she said.
The club is comprised of some 300 young people in the under 13 to under 20 age categories from the communities surrounding Heroes Circle, which include Fletcher’s Land, Jones Town, Allman Town, Kingston Gardens and Woodford Park.
