As Minister responsible for the grant and revocation of cable licences, it has come to my attention that one of the major cable operators in Kingston and St. Andrew, Entertainment Systems Limited, has suddenly ceased operation and that its cable business has been acquired by island-wide operator, Flow.
I am aware that the thousands of customers affected by this change were given no notice by Entertainment Systems that it was going out of business.
In light of the public concern that has been expressed widely, I have been in touch with the regulatory body responsible for the electronic media, the Broadcasting Commission.
I am advised that the matter is receiving the urgent attention of the Broadcasting Commission, which met this morning. The Commission has informed me that no request was made for it to approve the transaction and that the matter is being addressed.
The Commission will keep me updated on relevant developments, and later this week, further details will be provided to the wider public by the regulatory body.
