The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has deployed specialised teams to bolster recovery efforts and safeguard vulnerable groups as residents rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.
This was disclosed by Portfolio Minister, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., while addressing the Prime Minister’s Christmas Treat at the Petersfield High School shelter in Westmoreland on Saturday (December 13).
Mr. Charles said officers from the Ministry’s Labour Division are actively engaging individuals to help them safely transition back into economic activity.
He noted that as rebuilding efforts intensify, the Ministry is paying close attention to the risk of child labour, particularly in post-disaster recovery settings.
“We have a team here that is focused on eradicating child labour because, in this restoration process, we know that there will be the risk of many of our children being, unfortunately and inadvertently, used as part of the process. We don’t want to see… children on… roofs doing anything dangerous,” the Minister stated.
Mr. Charles said the Ministry is maintaining a strong presence in affected communities through ongoing assessments, in line with directives from Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.
The Minister also expressed appreciation to residents for their cooperation during the recovery process, while commending Ministry staff who continue to serve even as they themselves have been personally affected by the hurricane.
Mr. Charles also thanked the Prime Minister for his continued engagement with affected communities, despite his demanding schedule.
