Special Thanks To Healthcare Workers

A call has been made for Jamaicans to show special gratitude to workers in the health sector during the month of July, which has been designated as Healthcare Workers Appreciation Month.

Addressing a Thanksgiving Service to commemorate the Month on July 3, at the Boulevard Baptist Church in St. Andrew, Chairperson for the Healthcare Workers Appreciation Committee,

Professor the Most Hon. Dr. Denise Eldemire-Shearer, said the workers have made “tremendous sacrifice” to contain the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and they must be embraced by all in the society.

She said the COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the importance of primary healthcare, and while the Government will be “thanking and honouring” all for their sacrifice and commitment, there is a role for the wider public.

“We must ensure that all our healthcare workers know that their invaluable sacrifice is appreciated. We invite businesses and companies, large and small, to reach out to these dedicated, very diverse groups, and show appreciation,” Professor Eldemire-Shearer said.

In a circulated message to the congregants, which included scores of health professionals, and personnel from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, portfolio Minister, Dr. the Hon. Christopher

Tufton, pointed out that throughout the pandemic, the workers dedicated their time and effort to “provide Jamaicans with quality service”.

“You epitomise ‘service above self’, and for that, we want you to know that your invaluable service has not gone unnoticed. The Government and the Ministry appreciate you. Thank you for your commitment, service and sacrifice,” the Minister said.

Among the activities to be staged across the island during the month are award ceremonies for staff members, sport, entertainment and beach events, and ecumenical services.

The Ministry has a vision of a health system that is client-centred and guarantees access to quality healthcare for every person in the population, at reasonable costs, and which takes into account the needs of the vulnerable in the society.

It also seeks to provide information and to educate the populace, to facilitate individuals taking responsibility for their own health, making informed decisions, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

All this, within a clean, healthy environment where families and communities actively participate and are integrated into the system of health.
