The Full Story

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, says Spanish Town is experiencing a transformation, with new and expanded businesses, infrastructure projects and revitalisation of communities.

“The town has been transforming before our eyes,” she said citing the Government’s “deliberate focus on developing new communities, rehabilitating existing communities, the development and maintenance of infrastructure, including healthcare facilities.”

She was addressing a ceremony for the official opening of Island Grill’s New Brunswick Village restaurant in the St. Catherine capital on Wednesday (April 10).

Minister Grange, who is Member of Parliament for St. Catherine Central, welcomed the investment by Island Grill in the historical town and parish.

“The new development, as the town marks 490 years since its founding, is a testament to its resilience and its ability to remake itself. Spanish Town is ripe for development,” she noted.

She said that the project demonstrates the value of partnership “with everybody working together to deliver a successful development”.

Mayor of Spanish Town, Councillor Norman Scott, called on Island Grill to engage farmers in St. Catherine who produce “high quality” fruits and vegetables, so that “a mutually beneficial relationship” can be established.

Island Grill is a leading Jamaican-owned restaurant that specialises in creating dishes with the distinct taste and flavour of Jamaica.
