Children’s Advocate, Diahann Gordon-Harrison, is urging the society to remain vigilant and consistently address persistent violence affecting children.
Speaking during the annual Early Childhood Commission (ECC) Professional Development Institute at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Wednesday (May 21), Mrs. Gordon Harrison pointed to recent tragedies, including the shooting of a four-year-old girl during celebrations in Manchester, as stark reminders of the pervasive violence and negative influences affecting children.
“Children are experiencing trauma every day. This wave of violence signifies a societal failure – a reflection of a culture that needs urgent transformation,” she emphasised.
Mrs. Gordon Harrison called for a collective effort among the Government, communities, parents, and civil society to create safer environments for children.
“Protecting our children is a shared responsibility. We must be vigilant, proactive, and compassionate. Our children deserve safe spaces, nurturing environments, and the freedom to grow without fear,” she maintained.
Mrs. Gordon Harrison reaffirmed her office’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and fostering a society where every child can thrive in safety and dignity.
The Office of the Children’s Advocate is mandated by law to champion children’s rights, ensure their safety, and provide guidance to institutions working with them.
It advocates for policy improvements, conducts investigations, and works collaboratively with stakeholders to build safer communities for Jamaica’s youngest citizens.
