An automated car park, designed to improve parking efficiency and ease congestion, was officially commissioned on Harbour Street in Montego Bay by the St. James Municipal Corporation on June 11.
The development represents a significant step in modernising urban infrastructure and enhancing the overall parking experience for motorists in St. James.
Customers will receive a time-stamped card from the automated system upon entry and make payment at a designated window upon exit.
The system records all transactions, enabling real-time revenue monitoring.
A monthly pass option will also be available, allowing motorists to prepay for access to the car park.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Mayor of Montego Bay and Chairman of the St. James Municipal Corporation, Councillor Richard Vernon, stated that the project represents a significant investment in the area’s development.
“We are here to position Montego Bay as a tech-enabled city, and this automated car park is a small ladder in the greater vision that we have,” he said.
Councillor Vernon further noted that the automated system is expected to drive revenue growth.
“This will also bring us to a stage where we can [achieve] better traffic management across Montego Bay and advance the broader vision of transforming the city into a smart urban centre,” he added.
Project Director, Nicholas Thompson, of Innovative Core Solutions emphasised that the facility has been specifically designed to prevent unauthorised access.
“If you come in and pass your card over the fence to give somebody else to come in, it is going to tell you that you are already in,” he said, warning against attempts to cheat the system.
Motorist, Allan Green, described the project as a forward-thinking solution to the city’s growing parking challenges.
“I know for sure that motorists would really appreciate this, because we really need additional space in the city for parking. With this electronic system in place, we can park securely, receive a convenient ticket, and have confidence that our vehicles are safe,” he said.
