A cheque for $800,000 to cover the tuition fees of 103 sixth form students at Cornwall College, in Montego Bay, was presented to Headboy, Jason Bowen, on December 2, by Member of Parliament for North West St. James, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang.
Dr. Chang, who is also Minister of Water and Housing, said the money, which comes from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), represents 50 per cent of the required payment, the rest of which will be paid in January, 2011.
He explained that the money forms part of his continued contribution towards education in St. James, especially with a view to assisting the many needy students in the constituency.
“While I will not be able to do it every year, I want to make the gesture to send a message that we are committed to working with them; we want to give them support, and we want to encourage and celebrate their success,” the Minister said.
He expressed the hope that the assistance will encourage the beneficiaries to continue on the path of their personal ambitions.
Dr. Chang said sixth form is a very important aspect of the educational development of the students, as it serves as a good transition to tertiary education, or the world of work.
“You want them (sixth form students) to focus on their personal development as much as they can. It is very challenging when they have to worry about fees and lunch money,” he said.
