The country’s export market access capacity has been strengthened with the accreditation of six laboratories by the Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC).

The agency has awarded eight accreditation certificates to the six laboratories, four of which provide food testing services for the domestic and export markets, such as North and South America, and Europe, among other regions.

This was disclosed by State Minister for Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Hon. Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams, in her 2014/15 Sectoral Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on June 18, under the theme: ‘Facilitating the Growth of Industries’.

The State Minister pointed out that with the laboratories’ accreditation, clients are provided with the assurance that Jamaica’s exports meet international standards.

“All of these activities help to facilitate the entry of our products into foreign markets, eliminating the need for retesting prior to distribution for sale,” she indicated.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Ffolkes-Abrahams advised that five companies have been certified by the National Certification Body of Jamaica (NCBJ) to International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 9001, and one to ISO 14001 standards.

She further told the House that the certification process to ISO 9001 for another two companies is currently at an advanced stage, while plans are underway to seek accreditation for the ISO 2200 food safety management system standard, this fiscal year.

The ISO is the largest global developer of voluntary international standards, which give state of the art specifications for products, services, and goods practice. These help to make the respective industries more efficient and effective.
