The Full Story

The Ministry of Education and Youth is reporting significant improvements in the results for Jamaican students sitting this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) external tests.

The results of the secondary-level exams, which were administered locally by the Overseas Examinations Commission in May and June, will be made available by the Ministry shortly.

Speaking during Wednesday’s (September 6) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Portfolio Minister, Hon. Fayval Williams, said the results indicate a recovery from the learning loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Whether you look at CSEC or CAPE, we are seeing better results relative to last year, which we applaud. We know that these students lived through the pandemic… they were in the virtual world quite a bit. They are the students of resilience, and we want to honour them for the diligence [and] for the work they put in to be at this point in their educational journey,” she said.

Minister Williams pointed out notable improvements by students in the City and Guilds examinations and the Sixth-Form Pathways Programme.

“We are happy for the recovery we are seeing as we move forward. The general pattern that we have observed, as represented by the exams, is a recovery in the learning loss,” she stated.
