Jamaicans, whether they live here or overseas, continue to make their contributions to the island’s development. And with the Diaspora making worthwhile contributions to health, sports and education, there can be no argument regarding their role in the growth of the economy. This week we’re Going for Growth with the Diaspora.

The 8th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference has come and gone, providing yet another opportunity for Jamaicans all around the globe to engage their home country, and partner with stakeholders to achieve the country’s economic and social objectives. On the closing day of the conference several attendees shared their thoughts and opinions on the Conference and its achievements to date.

The Rio Cobre Juvenile Correctional Centre for boys, located in Spanish Town, St. Catherine provides security, rehabilitation and education to boys 12 to 18 years old. The programmes at this centre include academic training, behaviour medication, recreational activities and vocational training. There are currently thirty-three boys being housed at the residential facility.

Once just a rural fishing village, Ocho Rios St. Ann is now one of the country’s major tourism hotspots. Kudos for that transformation is due in large part to the vision of former Prime Minister Edward Seaga.

We’ve looked at the work of the Diaspora taskforces for education, agriculture and health. Now let take time to examine the work of the Diaspora Taskforce dedicated to Technology. We were able to track town the Head of the Diaspora Technology Task Force, Peter Harrison who’s based in California. He filled us in on some the Taskforce’s initiatives and major achievements.
