Jamaicans locally and overseas are being encouraged to use the celebration of Jamaica Day on Friday (February 23) to show off their passion for the country to the rest of the world.
“Let the world know we are serious about celebrating who we are – our culture and all the other things which make us unique,” said Chair of the Jamaica Day Planning Committee and Senior Education Officer at the Ministry of Education and Youth, Marlon Williams.
He was addressing a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ at the Agency’s head office in Kingston.
Jamaica Day 2024 will be observed under the theme: ‘Celebrating Jamaica: Authentic and Unique… A Fi Wi TREND A Dweet’. “The aim is to have every single Jamaican from all spheres of life joining in the celebrations,” Mr. Williams said.
He urges private and public entities to decorate their offices in the Jamaican colours (black, green, and gold, or bandana) and for persons to dress up in the colours as they go about their business on the day.
Mr. Williams said celebrating Jamaica is for persons “a yaad, abroad and Jamaicans at heart; but we should also ensure it is not just a one-day celebration.”
“How we celebrate Jamaica every day must be evident in how we behave because, as Jamaicans, we should be setting an example for others to follow in light of the impact we have on the world stage,” he pointed out.
The Ministry of Education and Youth; Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport; and Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) will jointly spearhead Jamaica Day 2024 celebrations in schools.
Jamaica Day provides an opportunity for schools and the wider community to come together and showcase the diversity and individuality that make Jamaicans so special.
In 2011, Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, proclaimed that Jamaica Day should be celebrated annually on the last Friday of February, unless there are adverse circumstances.
