Local Government and Community Development Minister, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, is urging residents in low-lying and flood prone areas to take the necessary safeguards in the event of flooding resulting from severe weather conditions threatening Jamaica.

He directed this appeal particularly to persons living in the southern parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Thomas and St. Elizabeth.

The Minister said the administration would undertake to provide any possible assistance needed, including transportation for evacuations for which he said “arrangements will be made.”

“The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) will be on board to provide transportation to take people out of (affected) communities,” Mr. McKenzie said.

He was speaking during a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister, today (August 1).

A strong Tropical Wave over the central Caribbean has moved within 443 kilometres (275 miles) east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.

This has led to the National Meteorological Service placing Jamaica under a Tropical Storm Warning.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms associated with the system remain organized and a possible deterioration in weather conditions could influence the formation of a tropical storm later today or tonight.

Mr. McKenzie advised that the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) has been put on standby and will be able to respond to the needs where it becomes necessary.

The Local Government Minister also informed that all shelters have been activated.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has also undertaken garbage collection, particularly in low lying and flood prone areas, as part of the precautionary measures.
