The Full Story

Residents of Hanover are set to benefit from improved water supply, following the announcement of several upcoming water projects for the Parish.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness made the announcement at the ground-breaking ceremony for a matron’s quarters at the Hanover Infirmary on January 19.

Providing details on the initiative, Mr. Holness said the Rock Spring water supply improvement project is to be undertaken at a cost of $700 million and is set to benefit some 5,500 residents in the parish.

Another project is the Great River water treatment plant expansion, which is expected to supply an additional five million gallons of water per day.

“That is a US$34-million project, which is already planned and in the process of being executed. So, the residents of Hanover will see improvements in water supply,” the Prime Minister stated.

Work will also be undertaken on the Bamboo to Seaview and Lookout water supply improvement project at a cost of $45 million.

Work on the project is set to commence in March.

Mr. Holness noted that this project is “an example of a small local community water supply that is going to improve the lives of about 1,600 persons in that area”.

Work is also to be undertaken on the Merlene Ottey High pipeline extension project, at a cost of $34 million.

“This will be spent on improving that pipeline, making it a bigger diameter pipe, which will carry more water, and repairing the rusted and broken pipes, and that will benefit 3,000 persons,” he informed.

While admitting that there are challenges with roads and water in the parish, Mr. Holness encouraged the residents to “never lose sight of the fact that a lot of things are happening”.

The matron’s quarters at the Hanover Infirmary are to be constructed at a cost of $16 million, and the addition of furnishings is expected to bring that total to $20 million.

A therapeutic park was also officially opened at the facility, which was constructed at a cost of $5 million.
