The Full Story

The Government will be carrying out repairs to several roadways in Hanover Western during the 2023/2024 financial year.

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation with responsibility for works, Hon. Everald Warmington, made the disclosure on Thursday (April 13), following a tour of the road network in the constituency.

He was accompanied by Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Tamika Davis, and senior officials from the National Works Agency (NWA).

In an interview with JIS News, Minister Warmington indicated that immediate action will be taken to effect repairs to the thoroughfares once the estimates are provided the NWA’s technical team.

The roadways are Chelsea Bridge to Cacoon, Cacoon to Davis Cove, and Green Island to Glasgow and Malcolm Heights.

“All the [areas] that we looked at here really need urgent attention, and I can give her [the MP] the assurance that [once] the estimates are done, the concerns will be addressed and I’ll approve all of these projects,” Minister Warmington noted.

He said that Malcolm Heights can become an alternative route to avoid traffic congestion in the town of Lucea during peak hours.

“The MP has it as one of her main priorities. After going through and talking to her, I am convinced that it needs to be addressed, and that will urgently be addressed,” Mr. Warmington pledged.

He affirmed the Government’s commitment to infrastructure development in Hanover, noting that special emphasis will be given to the Riley Bridge area in Lucea, which overflows its banks during heavy rains.

“That is something we would have to address immediately. The [NWA’s] Regional Manager suggested that we do some river training along the banks to keep water from going into the town,” he said.

He noted that measures will also be undertaken to “address the bamboo that is coming down”, which impedes the flow of the river.
