Debate on a Bill to amend the Financial Administration and Audit Act(FAAA) to make the appointment of audit committees in Government departments mandatory, and to establish an Audit Commission to ensure their effectiveness, was suspended in the Senate Friday (April 3).
Minister of Justice and Leader of Government Business, Senator Dorothy Lightbourne, suspended the debate to allow the Senate time to look at concerns raised by Opposition Senator Mark Golding.
“In the interest of good governance and that, in fact, we do get out what is a substantially correct and technically correct Bill, I ask for the debate to be suspended and for the Bill to be considered in the next session,” Senator Lightbourne said.
Senator Lightbourne also moved a motion allowing for the debate on the Bill to be carried over into the next session. Parliament will be prorogued on Saturday(April 4) and the new 2009/2010 session starts on Tuesday(April 7).
