Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz, is appealing for renewed commitment to safety and recognition of the hard work, resilience, and dedication of seafarers. In his message to mark Day of the Seafarer 2024, which was observed on Tuesday, June 25, under the theme Safety Tips at Sea, Minister Vaz highlighted that seafarers “sustain the global economy and uphold the integrity of maritime operations, making a profound impact on our interconnected world”.He noted that the 2024 theme for Day of the Seafarer emphasises the importance of fostering a culture of safety at sea and encourages all stakeholders to collaborate in enhancing safety standards. It also invites seafarers to share their best #safetytipsatsea, promoting a dialogue on effective safety practices and mental well-being in maritime environments.

“We invite seafarers to share their insights on safety tips and coping strategies, encompassing everything from personal protective equipment to training protocols,” Minister Vaz said, while emphasising the Ministry’s commitment to continuous improvement.

“Your experiences and recommendations are invaluable in shaping policies, enhancing training programmes, and strengthening safety regulations through the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), in accordance with international standards,” the Minister added.

He pointed out that globally, safety at sea remains of paramount concern, impacting the lives of seafarers, passengers, and the marine environment.

Mr. Vaz reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to supporting seafarers through robust maritime policies that prioritise safety as a way of life.

Proper safety gear, rigorous training in emergency procedures, and adherence to established protocols are fundamental to maritime safety, stressed Minister Vaz, while encouraging seafarers to prioritise safety in all operations. “Together, we can build a safer maritime environment where every seafarer feels secure and supported, ensuring that safety remains at the forefront of our maritime operations,” the Minister said.

“As the Minister with responsibility for Transport, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to every seafarer for their unwavering commitment and vital contributions to our maritime industry,” he added. The Minister underscored the unique challenges faced daily by seafarers, “whether navigating through challenging waters, enduring harsh weather conditions, or managing complex onboard operations”.

“Your resilience and dedication are commendable, and Jamaica is deeply grateful for your service,” he said.
