The Full Story

The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) joins the global community in recognising International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, highlighting the importance of creating a workplace where men and women have equal opportunities to succeed. As the maritime sector continues to evolve, the SAJ is dedicated to ensuring that women are supported, recognised, and given the tools to thrive in the industry.

While significant progress has been made, women remain underrepresented in key maritime roles, and the sector must continue to push for greater inclusion. The SAJ acknowledges that addressing these gaps requires deliberate policies, structural support, and commitment from all stakeholders.

SAJ president Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester reinforced the organisation’s dedication to meaningful change. “The shipping industry cannot afford to overlook half of its talent pool. Women bring expertise, leadership, and innovation to maritime, and we must create pathways for their full participation. That means providing access to mentorship, advocating for policies that level the playing field, and ensuring that hiring and promotion decisions are based on merit. We remain focused on building an industry where ability, not gender, determines success.”

The Association also supports continued dialogue on best practices for fostering an environment where women can build long-term careers in shipping and calls on the industry to take concrete steps toward gender equity. Creating lasting change requires collective action, and all industry players must work together to remove barriers that hinder progress.
