The Full Story

Beneficiaries under the Restoration of Owner or Occupant Family Shelters (ROOFS) initiative are being encouraged to adopt hurricane-resilient construction practices as they rebuild stronger.

Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr, who made the appeal while addressing the Hanover leg of the ROOFS handover ceremony in Lucea on Wednesday (February 25), said that while the initiative provides financial assistance to restore damaged homes, the broader objective is to build resilience against future storms.

“As you go out and buy your material, make sure you buy your hurricane straps, make sure that you use the best practices,” he urged.

The Minister said that the support being provided should translate into improved safety and security for households, noting that the Government understands the fear “that many of you have when you see the setting up of rain and you know that your roof is not back on yet”.

“Make sure that you get the assistance so that the money puts you in a better place,” he said.

He assured residents awaiting assistance that the rollout remains ongoing, noting that there will be continued disbursements across the parish.

The ROOFS initiative forms part of the Government’s structured hurricane recovery programme, aimed at restoring homes while strengthening building standards and community resilience.
