Students and staff at the Robin’s Bay Primary in St. Mary, have given a fresh new look to the neighbouring Robin’s Bay beach, for the third consecutive year.
The exercise, which took place on December 11, saw students from grades one to six collecting some 15 bags of trash from the picturesque beach.
Speaking with JIS News, Grade six teacher, Alecia Whylie, said that it was the duty of Jamaicans to take care of their surroundings.
“Everyone needs to be involved in keeping the environment clean especially in light of climate change and other environmental challenges that we have. Everyone must participate to ensure that we have a better future,” Ms. Whylie said.
Pointing out that the school “has a perfect view of the beach”, the Educator stated that it was particularly important to have the pupils appreciate the concept of environmental stewardship while young.
The beach clean-up, she said, is just one aspect of this overall dive.
“We also have an annual environmental camp. These are the things that we instil in our students on a daily basis. It is not just a specific time of the year, we want them to learn about keeping the environment clean and safe so that they can also impart that to persons who visit the community,” Ms. Whylie continued.
She noted that this year’s clean-up was not as labour-intensive as previous years, thanks to a commitment from the community and other groups to keep the beach clean throughout the year.
Grade six student, Akeem Brown, who collected three bags of garbage, said that the experience was an exciting one.
His third consecutive time participating in the activity, Akeem told JIS News that, “I learned how to keep Jamaica clean. I collected plastic bags, plastic bottles and slippers.”
He stated that as a resident of the Robin’s Bay community, the beach is also a beloved spot for family recreation.
Sending a message to fellow Jamaicans, the 11-year-old urged: “Clean up Jamaica, keep your environment clean and stay clean.”
