The Full Story

Nine roads across Montego Bay in St. James have been repaired under the infrastructural component of the MoBay Striving Towards Environmental Protection & Urban Preservation (STEP-UP) programme.

The initiative aims to address pressing issues that affect residents in the parish, through comprehensive strategies.

Through collaboration with the Municipal Corporation, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), WPM Waste Management Limited, and the St. James Health Department, the programme has been making headway in resolving roadway concerns.

Speaking with JIS News, Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, said the programme continues to meet its objectives in improving urban orderliness.

“We are committed to local development and believe that improving road surfaces will allow our economy to perform better, due to reduced congestion. Therefore, we continue to ‘STEP-UP’ where it matters most,” he said.

In addition to major road repairs around the city, the programme’s task force has mobilised a roving team to carry out a thorough clean-up and debushing exercise.

The programme has already repaired the River Bay Road, Albion Road, Barnett Street, South Street, Harbour Street, Market Street, Sewell Ave, Jimmy Cliff Boulevard and the Godfrey Dyer Boulevard.

“These initiatives will continue routinely, with more components of the STEP-UP programme to be activated in short order,” the Mayor said.

As the programme continues to build out its infrastructural component, Thompson Street, Hart Street, Jarrett Street, Tate Street, McCatty Street, Queen Street, Princess Street, Railway Lane, Creek Street, Foster Ave and the Freeport Area will be the areas of focus.
