Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has disclosed that the stretch of road leading to the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, will be upgraded to provide improved access for commuters.
“On my way here, I noticed that there was significant traffic… and as I was coming in… I reflected that I made this trek to the University of the West Indies for many years,” he said.
“In fact, I was a student here… 30 years ago and the roads have not changed, it’s the same width; the only change that has been made, maybe 15 years ago, would have been the new gate at the main entrance, and I happen to know that it is under serious consideration. I know that the University has consulted with the NWA (National Works Agency) to have a new road built, widened road, better access facilities because the truth is…, we have outgrown the infrastructure,” Dr. Holness said.
He was delivering the keynote address at the health and wellness career exposition and employment fair at the Old Library, University of the West Indies, on January 22.
“When I’m driving on the roads, I do encounter delays, but I do have a particular advantage where the outriders help to clear the road. It is something that if I didn’t have to, I wouldn’t do it, but it is a part of the security arrangement,” he shared.
The Prime Minister said the Administration is in a constant mode of upgrading, renewing, rehabilitating and transforming to better meet the needs of Jamaicans.
“The number of cars that were on the road when I was at the University of the West Indies, it is almost two times the number of cars today. We haven’t widened the road or change the access to the University, so that entire stretch of road will be improved, indeed upgraded to a new better roadway to get to our University. We must have a roadway that is befitting of the University of the West Indies,” Dr. Holness said.
