The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising residents of Portmore to take precautions to reduce the effects of smoke exposure as a result of the fire at Riverton.
An increase in smoke in sections of the Gregory Park, Waterford and Greater Portmore communities and sections of the Toll Road has been observed as of this morning.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade is continuing its efforts to cover areas of the dump that are still burning, thus resulting in heavy smoke cover in these areas.
Schools Administrators in the affected areas are being asked to assess the situation and make a determination in the best interest of staff and students.
Tips for Protecting Yourself
- Avoid undue exposure to the smoke by closing windows and doors.
- Use a clean wet rag to cover your nose and mouth to minimise the effects of the smoke.
- The elderly, children and those with respiratory issues should take particular care to reduce smoke exposure.
