Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck, makes his contribution to the 2023/24 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on May 2.

The Full Story

The Ministry of Justice generated 8,313 marriage licences last year, amounting to $33.25 million in revenue at Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ).

“We are doing well, but we don’t mind more marriages, so we can provide more money to the Ministry of Finance,” Portfolio Minister, Hon. Delroy Chuck, said.

He was delivering his presentation in the 2023/24 Sectoral Debate, in the House of Representatives, on May 2.

“We enjoy when people come for their marriage licence, because it means that a family will be created, hopefully, or at least husband and wife,” he added.

The Minister also informed that the Ministry has been receiving applications for marriage licences from individuals from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

“Let it be clear; we do not support same-sex marriages as yet, or ever. The truth of the matter is people have been coming, asking us for marriage licence for two same sex; this, at the moment, is not permissible,” Mr. Chuck emphasised.
