The Full Story

Residents of Westmoreland are being encouraged to stay out of harm’s way so as to prevent a further strain on the workload at the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital in the parish.

The plea came from the Medical Officer of Health for the parish, Dr. Marcia Graham, who was addressing the monthly meeting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation, held in Savanna-la-Mar on Thursday (May 11).

The hospital has come under significant pressure with workload, and so we are encouraging you, if you can stay healthy and well, we would really encourage that,” she said.

“Crime and violence add to the workload; carelessness and motor-vehicle crashes add to our workload; so, all you can do to stay healthy and safe will help us,” Dr. Graham said.

Meanwhile, she also appealed to citizens to refrain from blocking the roadway that is located between the hospital and the health centre in the parish.

“It has been a recurring issue where it is a challenge sometimes for the ambulance and members of staff to get to the health centre [and] to get to the hospital, because persons refuse to use the parking lot that is assigned for the cost of only $100, and they park their vehicles along the hospital roadway, reducing access even in cases of emergency,” she said.
