The Full Story

Over 146 residents at the St. Catherine Infirmary were given a special easter treat, during a visit by Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, and a team of volunteers, to the institution on April 12.

The residents received treats such as bun and cheese, which were provided through the Hummingbird Charities Inc.

The Minister, who is also Member of Parliament for St. Catherine West Central, said he and his team saw the need to share with the residents.

He noted that many of the social cases at the Spanish Town Hospital, are placed at the infirmary, and that “this is an appropriate place to come and celebrate with you. We are grateful to the staff, and we are grateful to you who are residents here”.

Dr. Tufton also used the occasion to encourage the residents to practice healthy lifestyles.

“We want for you long and good life, and the fact that you are in an infirmary, doesn’t mean that you must be sick. We want you to take your medication, when the doctor, nurse or staff say you must take it. Make sure you eat the diet that you are provided with, based on your condition. Make sure you drink a lot of water, and find time to walk around and exercise,” the Minister said.

Matron at the institution, Moesha Jones, welcomed the visit, noting that “we are workers, they see us every day, and it is a wonderful experience to have them seeing new faces, and to have this addition in this season”.

For her part, Assistant Inspector of Poor for St. Catherine, Camille Hudson said the gifts brought “delight of the faces of our residents”.

The Spanish Town Infirmary provides food, clothing, housing, medical care, and emotional support for the indigent and destitute of St. Catherine.

It is one of the agencies that falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, through the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation, which is the governing body that directly oversees the running of the institution.
