March 2, 2011The Full Story
Scores of Portlanders are receiving treatment for eye illnesses at a special clinic, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Port Antonio, in association with the Rotary Club of Detroit Lakes in Minnesota, United States of America.
Held under the theme: ‘Sharing the gift of vision with the world’, the clinic began on February 28 and will end on March 2.
It is being manned by an 18-member group of health professionals from the Voluntary Optometric Service to Humanity (VOSH), including optometrists, opticians and other health functionaries.
First staged in 1982, the clinic is held every two years, facilitating detailed testing for glaucoma, cataracts and diabetes, in addition to providing eye glasses for persons in need of such assistance.
Speaking to JIS News, Senior member of the VOSH team, Dr. Larry Morrison, expressed satisfaction with the way the clinic has been progressing.
He said approximately 1,000 persons are expected to be treated over the thee days of service, adding that persons diagnosed to be affected by cataracts and diabetes will be referred to specialists for further care and attention, while those suffering from glaucoma will be given the necessary treatment to control the illness.
Commenting on the operation of the clinic, past President of the Rotary Club of Port Antonio, Dr. Satya Parvataneni, said the organisation is happy to be involved in the sponsorship of that project, adding that the response of the public to the initiative has been very strong.
In thanking the VOSH team for their generosity in providing the service at the clinic, he said their effort was a practical demonstration of the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self’.
Many of the persons who received treatment told JIS News that the clinic provided them with an opportunity to be helped, and thanked the Rotary Club of Port Antonio for its instrumentality in the provision of such well needed assistance.
