Residents of Portland Advised to Treat Drinking Water

Portland Health Department is advising residents of flood-affected areas of the parish to treat drinking water to prevent water borne disease.
Valerie McLeary, Health Educator for the Department, has said that a number of supply systems have been compromised due to the passage of Hurricane Dennis.
The affected communities are White Hall, Mount Vernon, Section, Cascade, Middletown, Bangor Ridge, Lennox, Mount St. Bernard, Mill Bank, Cornwall Barracks, Comfort Castle, Berrydale, Coopers Hill, Belleview, Reach, Windsor Castle, Guava Walk, Mount Pleasant and Long Bay.
The residents are being urged to use bleach to treat their water as an alternative to boiling it.Mrs. McLeary told JIS News, that the Health Department would be monitoring the situation closely to prevent any outbreak of diseases.
Meanwhile, both the Portland Parish Council and the National Water Commission (NWC) have given assurances that they were working assiduously to ensure that their supply systems were brought back to the highest and most efficient level of operation.
Superintendent of the Portland Parish Council, Bradley Barrett said the Council was in the process of cleaning intake valves to flush out contaminants before applying the necessary treatment, while Richard Williams, Commercial Manager for the NWC, has said that most of its systems, which were affected by the hurricane were back in operation, and was working around the clock to re-activate those, which were still out of service.
