Residents of Port Antonio and surrounding communities benefited from a Mini-Expo staged by the National Housing Trust (NHT) at the Errol Flynn Marina in Portland on March 13.
The event brought together key public and private-sector stakeholders involved in the homeownership process, providing attendees with information and guidance on purchasing, building, and improving their homes.
Participating alongside the NHT were two government agencies – the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and the National Land Agency (NLA), as well as the Trust’s External Financing Mortgage Programme (EFMP) partners: Scotia Bank, JN Bank, CIBC Caribbean, and National Commercial Bank (NCB).
In an interview with JIS News, NHT Marketing and Sales Officer for Kingston and St. Andrew and St. Thomas, Shawn Sybblis, explained the rationale behind staging the Mini-Expo.
“The main goal of the event is to ensure that our contributors are armed with the necessary information to become homeowners, home builders, and home improvers,” he said.
Mr. Sybblis noted that while no single product or programme was being highlighted, the focus was on equipping persons with the knowledge needed to navigate the homeownership journey.
“We just want to ensure that persons have the requisite information so that when you’re looking to become a homeowner or buyer or home builder, they know exactly what to do and what to look for so that they can be properly prepared,” he added.
Mr. Sybblis further explained that the inclusion of multiple agencies and companies was deliberate and was aimed at creating a one-stop location for individuals seeking information on various aspects of homeownership.
He noted that the Trust’s EFMP partners were on hand to provide guidance on financial support options available to prospective homeowners.
“We understand that persons are working, so what we try to do is bring the information directly to them; bring the information at their feet,” he added.
The initiative forms part of the NHT’s ongoing efforts to connect contributors with the resources and partners needed to take the next step towards homeownership.
