MONTEGO BAY — The Beverly Community Centre and playfield in St. Ann, which was refurbished through $5.5 million from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), was officially opened and handed over to the residents on Thursday October 13, 2011.
The project entailed electrical works, repairing of the roof and flooring, landscaping, while a proper drainage system was put in place.
Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Local Government and the CDF, Hon. Shahine Robinson, who addressed the ceremony held on the playfield, said that projects of this nature were in keeping with the Government’s focus on youth development and providing the building blocks for prosperous communities.
She said it is essential to create space where people can come together for recreation and other community activities.
"The world over is replete with numerous studies, literatures and many tangible examples that a major social ill that leads to urban blight and dysfunctional societies is the lack of green space and recreation areas…for citizens to gather to discuss ideas and perform other community-oriented actions, all geared at improving the social networking capabilities of our people," she stated.
"What community driven interventions such as this is trying to do, is to improve the productivity of the country, increase participation and interaction among community members and it deepens the involvement of the constituents moving away from the top down approach,” she added, while urging the residents to take care of the facilities.
Also present at the handing over ceremony were Minister of State for Youth, Culture and Sports, Senator the Hon. Warren Newby; Member of Parliament for North West St. Ann, and Minister of State for Transport and Works, Hon. Othneil Lawrence; and Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Councilor Vinette Robb.
