A record 148 new Justices of the Peace (JPs) have been commissioned for the parish of St. Andrew.
The commissioning ceremony was held on Sunday (February 23) at the Karl Hendrickson Auditorim on the Jamaica College campus.
Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Hon. Delroy Chuck, congratulated the group, which he noted, is the largest to be installed at one time.
He noted also that the Ministry is on a drive to appoint more JPs and train them for the responsibilities that the office demands.
“I am happy that over the last 10 years we have more than doubled the number of JPs available across the island… . Even though we are commissioning many JPs we are open to more,” he said.

Noting there are now more than 2,000 JPs serving St. Andrew, he urged them to work together in service for the greater good.
“We want to feel the impact of JPs across St. Andrew. There are so many things to be done, especially to access justice and to ensure peace, and we need all the JPs to participate. You do so from your individual positions but more so when you work collectively,” he pointed out.
Minister Chuck charged the new JPs to take every opportunity to promote Restorative Justice (RJ) as a means of delivering justice and promoting peace in the society.
“It is important that you, as JPs, get the parties who have a problem to settle their issues amicably to avoid the [conflicts and violence] that frequently occur if parties cannot settle their differences,” he said.
“You are the ones who must assist them in accessing justice services,” he pointed out.
