The Full Story
Practitioners in the island’s real estate industry are to benefit from training to improve the services they offer the public.
The training will be provided through the Real Estate Training Institute (RETI), which will be launched tomorrow (February 16) at the head offices of the Real Estate Board (REB), 24 Trafalgar Road in New Kingston.
Chief Executive Officer of the REB, Sandra Watson, said the training programme, which will get underway in March, offers a “fresh wind of opportunity” for various practitioners.
She said the RETI will offer various training courses that will be tailored to meet the needs of persons at different levels of the industry.
“It will provide new training for those who are unaware of the full extent of their roles, legal obligations and rights, which will strengthen the services they can offer,” Mrs. Brown said.
“Those already involved in the industry, we’re going to do continuing education with them. Members of the Jamaican Bar Association, who are interested in the new Time Share system that is coming in, and those interested in the new Strata Act, we’ll have (many) different training programmes for them,” she informed.
She explained that for new entrants to the industry, they will be required to register for the pre-licensing courses and upon passing the real estate examination, they will be given a licence to practise real estate.
Mrs. Watson noted that the RETI will also address the “knowledge gap” among owners of strata units.
“Being unaware allows other people to trample all over them. So, we are training them how to govern themselves. We’re training them in strata accounting and introducing a new accounting package for strata,” she informed.
