Thousands of Jamaicans and visitors to the island are expected to journey to the historic Sligoville community in St. Catherine on July 31 and August 1 for Emancifest 2019. The 12th staging of the annual event, being held under the theme ‘Where freedom meets culture…Preserving our culture’, will take place at the Sligoville Multipurpose Stadium.

The Jamaica Fire Brigade JFB has strengthened its capacity to respond to fires and other natural disasters after recently receiving equipment from the United States Embassy in Kingston. Valued at over 30 million dollars, the first responder equipment includes fire proximity suits, fire proximity gloves, fire boots, coveralls, bed nets, cots, axes, shovels, rakes and large military-grade tents. These will be distributed to the 34 fire stations across 13 divisions of the JFB islandwide.

Building a first world country involves connecting people to improved service delivery, operating at higher standards and making improvements along the way. Recognising this, the government has opened a new justice centre in Santa Cruz St Elizabeth, to increase access to justice related services. The Centre, constructed in under five months, is the sixth parish justice centre in operation across the island.

As part of the latest series of recent upgrades to hospital infrastructure across the island, Victoria Jubilee Hospital now has access to a new elevator. The installation of the new elevator was facilitated by the National Health Fund NHF at a cost of over 16 million dollars.

All Flowers are Roses Summer Series is workshop designed to teach others about self defense physically and artistically by allowing its participants to express themselves with their words and their bodies. Being held at the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, the series is being done through the Poet Laureate Programme with the initiative’s name being inspired by a collection of poems written by the poet laureate of Jamaica, Lorna Goodison.

Ninety aspiring principals have been equipped with the skills and competencies to assume leadership roles in the nation’s public schools. These individuals, who were trained under the National College for Educational Leadership’s NCEL Aspiring Principals Programme, were presented with certificates, during a graduation exercise on Tuesday. Graduates were conferred with the Professional Qualification for Principalship PQP.
