In 2016, Wayde Van Niekerk was the fastest man in the world over 400m, smashing the men’s world record for the event at the Rio Olympics, en route to winning an Olympic gold medal. His historic run lowered the mark by .15 seconds, moving it from 43.18 seconds to 43.03. However, a year later misfortune came as Van Niekerk suffered a serious knee ligament injury, and was later diagnosed with medial and lateral tears of the meniscus and tearing in his anterior cruciate ligament.
