Summer is a fun time for children and being out of the classroom means they will be far more interested in having fun and engaging in leisure activities than in learning in a formal way. However, a lack of balance between learning and leisure during the holidays can cause students to fall behind in their schoolwork. Education specialist at UNICEF Jamaica Dr. Rebecca Tortello, said this type of learning loss that students may face over the summer months while school is not in session is referred to as the “Summer slide.”
