Changes are coming in how a person suspected of an offence is granted bail.
The new Bail Act enables three stages at which bail can be approved – before charge, after charge, and after conviction. This differs from what now obtains as persons are only granted bail on charge, and in limited circumstances after conviction.
Legal and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Marlene Malahoo Forte notes that pre-charge bail is intended to allow the police more time to build their case against suspects of certain high-profile offences.
