A new system for motor vehicle license classification will be introduced when the new Road Traffic Act and its regulations come into effect. Director of the Island Traffic Authority (ITA), Kenute Hare says under the new system the current classifications of Private and General will be phased out, and a new three-class system with sub-classifications introduced.

Transport Minister, Audley Shaw says the Ministry is fully committed to the execution of Jamaica’s road and vehicular safety policies, in accordance with the United Nations Second Decade of Action for Road Safety. He notes that the implementation of the new Road Traffic Act (RTA) and its Regulations, which was passed in Parliament earlier this year, is a welcome sign that Jamaica intends to reduce the high number of road traffic deaths plaguing the country as well as the general indiscipline on the roads.

The Ministry of Transport and Mining has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the training of operators in the public transport sector under the Team Jamaica programme. Under the agreement some 1000 personnel will be trained as Jamaica Union of Travellers Association (JUTA) counterparts, as well as first responders and road safety ambassadors.

With the resumption of schools naturally comes the issue of transportation for students. That in mind, Minister of Transport and Mining, Audley Shaw says some 100 Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses have been restored and put back in operation to meet the transportation needs of students and teachers.
