Residents of Somerton St James To Receive Free Dental Checks

Scores of residents in Somerton, St. James, and its environs last week benefited from free dental services during the Great Shape! Inc.1000 Smiles Project dental clinic. The five-day engagement, held at the Somerton All-Age School, was led by a team of 45 professional and student dental care volunteers from the United States of America, Canada, and the Caribbean. The clinic, staged in collaboration with the Sandals Foundation, saw persons receiving fillings, cleanings and extractions, as well as participating in oral health seminars.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has donated one million dollars to the Bustamante Hospital for Children through his Positive Jamaica Foundation. Mr. Holness presented the cheque during a tour and toy distribution visit to the facility on December 22. A wreath laying ceremony was held on Sunday December 22, at the Zong Monument in Black River, St Elizabeth, to honour and remember the lives of the African slaves who died in the Zong Massacre of 1781. The Zong Massacre saw the throwing overboard of 132 slaves to lighten the slave ship, The Zong, which left the western coast of Africa, bound for Black River with approximately 440 enslaved Africans.
