NHA-Derrick Mckoy

Born in Kingston in 1951 and later raised in the cooler winds of Mandeville, Dr. Derrick Vincent Mckoy will be celebrating his birthday this month as well as membership in the order of Distinction in the rank of Commander. Dr. Mckoy says he is proud of being a teacher and feels humbled and pleased to receive the honour from his country. Dr. Mckoy will be honoured for outstanding contribution to the Legal Profession and Public Service in Jamaica.

Teaching for Helen Douglas is more than imparting knowledge to her students. She says it includes building a relationship with a child and their parent(s) with the objective of bringing out the best in the child. On Heroes Day, October 18, Ms. Douglas was conferred with membership in the Order of Distinction, in the rank of officer for dedicated service and commitment to excellence in education.

An epidemiologist by profession, Dr. Elizabeth Ward has spent most of her professional career examining the data behind illnesses and how to control them. She sought to bring this scientific approach to her community work, which led her and several others to form the Violence Prevention Alliance in 2004. Dr.  Ward has been conferred with membership into the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer, for her contribution to public service in the areas of National Security and Justice.
