Jamaica and Spain have enjoyed constructive and mutually supportive relations for many years. Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1966, four years after Jamaica’s Independence on August 6, 1962.

As the Government undertakes initiatives to achieve energy security for the country, it has actively sought partnerships with international development organizations to gain both funding and technical assistance to ensure the sector keeps pace with the rest of the world. Several key initiatives are being implemented with the assistance of the United States Department of State. Recently Jamaica was tapped by the Department of State to receive funding for the implementation of several alternative energy projects, geared at reducing Jamaica’s energy costs, while minimizing the impact on the environment.

Leaders continually strive to be better no matter the calling and no matter the stage of life they are at. At 17 years old, Sandray Miller recognises the value of self-improvement and is steadily making strides to do so. Sandray, who hails from St. Catherine is the 2019 Jamaica 4-h clubs Boy of the year, the President of the Junior Leaders League for the St. Catherine 4-h clubs, Public Relations Officer for the National Junior Leaders League, the Youth in Agriculture Ambassador for the St. Catherine Jamaica Agricultural Society and a Social Media Officer with the Jamaica 4-h clubs.

The unemployment rate declined to a new record low of 7.8 percent in April 2019. This follows on previous record low rates of 8.4 percent in July 2018, 8.7 percent in October 2018 and 8 percent in January 2019. April’s figure is 2 percentage points lower than the 9.8 percent recorded for April 2018.

The Government is on a mission to diversify Jamaica’s energy mix and this involves the sourcing of alternatives to petroleum to power vehicles on a daily basis. The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is courting the use of compressed natural gas cng to fuel a section of its fleet and over a 6 month period, 5 buses will be used to examine the viability of this move.

The Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology through the Universal Service Fund (USF) is on a mission to make access to the internet and related technologies commonplace. One of the USF’s key initiatives under this mandate has been the roll out of Community Access Points (CAPs) across the island. A CAP was recently established at the Maverly Primary and Junior High School in St. Andrew, part of efforts to further empower students at the institution and persons in the surrounding communities to live, work and do business in a technological age.

The Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) is a funding mechanism under the Climate Investment Fund, which helps developing countries, like Jamaica, incorporate climate resilience into our growth and development plans. Essentially, the government and its private partners have secured funding to ensure that the country is prepared for severe weather conditions.
