Jamaica Celebrating Senior Citizens Week

‘Older Persons: Partners in Social, Cultural and Economic Development’. That’s the theme for Senior Citizens’ Week being observed from September 22 to October 1. The Ministry of Labour and Social Security will recognise the contributions of the elderly to national development during the annual celebrations. Activities began with the launch at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston last Friday, followed by a national church service on September 22 at Grace Baptist Church in Clarendon.

Scores of residents in Hanover were exposed to the virtues of good parenting and partnership at a recent public lecture in the parish. The event, was organised by the Lucea United Church Family Life Ministries, in celebration of National Parent Month 2019 in November. The audience, which included parents, principals, teachers, students and others, saw presentations on how to become better role models and mentors for their children, as well as how to be supportive of each other in the home. The Press Association of Jamaica PAJ has honoured four of Jamaica’s veteran Journalists serving the country through a combined effort that spans one hundred and forty four years. Broadcaster Enthrose Campbell, Photographer Headley Dellmar Samuels, Broadcaster Elise Kelly and Journalist Karen Madden received citations and plaques during a luncheon on Wednesday. The government will be rolling out a new programme to assist adolescent fathers in meeting their parental responsibilities.   Dubbed the Young Fathers Jamaica Initiative the new programme will be implemented by the Women's Centre Foundation of Jamaica, which also runs the Programme for Adolescent Mothers. The Ministry of Transport and Mining is planning a week of activities from November 17 – 23, geared at stimulating investment in the mining sector. Transport and Mining Minister Robert Montague says the week of activities dubbed National Minerals Week will comprise forums and panel discussions geared at educating Jamaicans about the various investment opportunities available in the sector.
