Jamaicans at home and abroad still mark the transfer of British power with celebrations yearly. The activities are to honour those who fought for freedom and are a reminder that the management of the country’s affairs now rests in the hands of a locally elected Cabinet. Independence Day was previously observed on the first Monday in August but has now been fixed to August 6 with the re-introduction of Emancipation Day on August 1.
