Did you know that for the period 1993 to 2003, Jamaica suffered losses of some 2.2 billion dollars from an estimated 26 natural disasters? The losses wiped out about 1.5 percent of the island’s gross domestic product (GDP). Recognising this, the government is taking proactive steps to develop financial instruments, together with its international development partners, to provide safeguards. The latest is a provision from the World Bank.
